The lifespan of a dental crown is about 15-20 years on average, so it’s not meant to last a lifetime. While most remain in place without any issue, accidents happen, and when they do, they can cause a person to panic. When losing a crown, it’s natural to worry about how it will affect your smile, but the reality is that as long as you contact your emergency dentist right away, chances are everything will be okay. Read on to learn what steps you need to take when faced with a lost dental crown.

Step #1: Call Your Dentist

As soon as you notice that your dental crown has fallen out, call your dentist’s office immediately. This will alert them to the problem and allow them to find a time when you can come in for treatment. Depending on your symptoms and the severity of the situation, you may or may not need to schedule an appointment the same day.

Step #2: Retrieve the Crown

If you can find the crown, retrieve it and rinse off any debris. You can try to use temporary dental cement to reattach it; however, this is not required. Many individuals struggle with this step, so if you are unsuccessful, be sure to bring it with you to your appointment.

Step #3: Be Careful While at Home

While you wait for your appointment, your dental team may provide helpful tips to minimize discomfort and prevent further harm. For example, you will need to avoid chewing on the side of your mouth where the lost crown is. Also, be careful when cleaning your teeth and gums so you don’t further irritate the affected area. You may also find it best to avoid hard, crunchy, acidic, or sweet foods and beverages, as your natural tooth will be exposed, making it more sensitive.

Step #4: Receive Essential Care

When you arrive for your appointment, your dentist will evaluate the situation and take the necessary digital images to determine whether the crown can be reattached or replaced. If it is fully intact and still in good shape, they may be able to re-bond it so that you leave with a better-protected tooth. Otherwise, a new crown will need to be created to ensure your smile remains properly safeguarded moving forward.

Don’t panic if you lose a dental crown. By staying calm and calling your emergency dentist for help, you can get the restorative care you need to resume life with a healthier, protected, and beautiful smile.
